Squires Kitchen Exhibition 2014

I’ve just spent a fun weekend at the 28^th annual Squires Kitchen Exhibition in Farnham, Surrey.

It was my third year of being asked to exhibit my cakes in the Wedding Cake Showroom, and I feel so lucky to be amongst some amazing cake designers and their fabulous new wedding cake designs.

I thought I would share the inspiration behind some of my cakes from the exhibition.

The Gold Stand Wedding Cake was inspired by the gorgeous cakes by Swank Cake Design. I wanted to create the illusion that the whole 5 tiers were resting on the gold feet. I used some of the key colours for 2014 with the gold, blush pink roses and dusky green hydrangeas.

The Pantone colour for 2014 is Radiant Orchid and I made a sugar anemone in a similar colour which I surrounded with lots of tiny lilac flowers. The ruffles trend shows no sign of slowing, so to add a different dimension to the bottom tier, I added vertical ruffles.

While browsing Pinterest (far too much time is spent on there!) I found an amazing dusty blue vintage wedding dress, with a beautiful scalloped lace base and a pink corsage at its waist. I replicated this for the Dusty Blue Lace cake using a combination of sugar lace for the scalloped base and “waist” detail and then brush embroidery for the remainder of the cake.

The final cake I exhibited, Vintage Rice Paper Flowers, will be featured in the next issue of Cakes and Sugarcraft Magazine with a “how to” make the edible rice flowers.

A gorgeous wedding at Cripps Barn, Bibury

Cripps Barn is a new venue for me and I was very excited to be delivering a cake there this weekend.

I wasn’t disappointed!! The barn is just gorgeous and the lovely wedding events manager, Lisa-Marie, took time out of her busy day to show me around.

The very pretty outside ceremony setting was all ready, fingers crossed the rain stayed away for the wedding to take place outside, and the gardens were beautiful and I can imagine they will be stunning when lit by the many flares and fire pit in the evening.

The inside of the barn had been dressed with beautiful pompoms by the Bride and Groom, with the flowers and table settings arranged by the fabulous ladies from The Fresh Flower Company - look at those amazing gypsophila balls!

A gorgeous venue and I can’t wait for my next delivery there in the Autumn!

A busy week in JellyCake’s kitchen!

The Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May is always a very popular weekend to get married and 2013 was no exception. With 4 wedding orders booked in, and deliveries from South Gloucestershire to the SouthCoast, it was going to be busy!

The kitchen was well and truly taken over with 230 biscuit favours and 20 cakes to bake. In a few quieter moments the week before I had been able to make some of the place cards to be tied onto the iced biscuit favours and the orchids and germini’s for one of the cakes.

Usually, the sponge cakes are all baked on day one, torted and iced on day two, then stacked and decorated. However, with 3 cakes to be delivered over 3 days it was a bit of a logistical challenge to get everything completed at the right time!

The first of the deliveries on Friday saw me at the Groom’s family farm near Malmesbury, delivering a vintage style red and gold wedding cake. The marquee was vast and in the process of being decorated with huge flower arrangements that looked stunning. I had also made sugar figures of the Bride and Groom’s dogs, which took pride of place in front of the cake!

On the way home I delivered the order of pink heart iced biscuit favours to Winkworth Farm, that were also being used as place cards.

It was a very early start on Saturday, conscious that it was the Bank Holiday weekend, we left at 7.30am to drive down to Milford on Sea to deliver Donna and Peter’s cake and biscuit favours. I knew I was going to love this venue, just by the name – The Beach House – and we weren’t disappointed! The view from the dining room was amazing with views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

The bride and groom were there, having taken over the whole hotel and were spending the morning overseeing the arrangements and relaxing with friends and family. The beautifully panelled entrance hall of the hotel was doubling up as the ceremony room with the marriage taking place on the landing on the stairwell. As there were 2 dining rooms, the couple had a little table for two in each room, and were planning to spend half the meal at each one.

It’s quite unusual having the couple there while delivering the cake, and it was lovely to see the look on the bride’s face when we brought the cake in. It matched the flowers very nicely too!

I also made iced favours for the guests which had an edible image of the couple’s yacht on it with sugar sails, and again these were doubling up as place cards.

The journey home was a little arduous as the weather was glorious and it seemed everyone wanted to get to the south coast! But we made it back and I started work finishing off the decoration for the last cake of the weekend.

Emma and Matt were getting married at Bowood and wanted a hydrangea version of my Roses and Blossoms wedding cake, with a pale hydrangea blue as the colour scheme. Emma also loved the wooden bride and groom topper with the crochet hearts and bunting from my Buttercream Ruffles wedding cake. I made the fabric bunting and had the hearts crocheted for me. The cake looked very pretty and had a gluten free layer especially for Emma. There were also blue and ivory iced biscuits for the wedding favours.

It’s shaping up to be the busiest summer yet for JellyCake, making and baking wedding cakes in our Wiltshire kitchen, so keep an eye out for lots of weddings in the coming weeks!

Squires Kitchen Exhibition 2013

I started 2013 with excellent intentions to create the 4 new show cakes that I would be taking with me to exhibit in the Wedding Cake Showroom at the 2013 Squires Kitchen Exhibition. I sat down in January and sketched out 4 cakes incorporating lots of flowers and new designs and techniques that I’d been meaning to try out, but never had the time.

I bought all the cake dummies and necessary supplies to create the cakes and….. there they sat, all lonely and forlorn in my cake room. I had, what I thought was going to be, a lovely quiet start to the new year. A couple of wedding cakes, a birthday cake and plenty of time to spend creating the show cakes. However, an influx of last minute orders – including a wonderful bride who had brought her wedding forward and arranged everything in 8 weeks, amazing!! – put my plans back somewhat.

So, early March had me panicking with 13 bare dummy cakes taunting me and only 2 weeks to go. Well, never let it be said that cake makers actually need sleep! Several late nights and working solidly through the days (even nearly forgetting to collect my daughter from school one day when I was so engrossed in making ranunculus flowers!) and they were complete. I hadn’t even deviated from my original sketches, all exactly as I’d planned, it was a miracle!!

Thursday 14^th March saw us making the journey to Farnham to set up my display. It was lovely to see some of the other fabulous cake designers that I had befriended last year, and to say that I was very honoured to be among the 20 cake designers exhibiting there, would be an understatement.

It was fabulous to see all of the amazing wedding cakes in the showroom and great to chat to the other designers and some of the visitors too. I even managed to fit in a mini class with the fabulous Carlos Lischetti. My daughter was adamant she wanted to be there, and was most excited to meet the lovely Phil Vickery and Eddie Spence who were kind enough to have a picture taken with her!

It was a fabulous few days and I’m really looking forward to next year! Maybe I’ll even get the cakes finished a little earlier…. I doubt it, but you never know!!

The Rectory’s Wedding Fayre - March 2013

I am very lucky to be the recommended supplier to some gorgeous local wedding venues, however The Rectory has to be one of my absolute favourites, and if I was ever to renew my vows, would be my venue of choice!

Their Spring 2013 wedding fayre was on a cold and misty Sunday in March and JellyCake was there along with lots of other fabulous local suppliers.

The Rectory has a lovely homely feel to it, lots of comfy sofas, wellies at the front door, and a beautiful panelled dining room. But it doesn’t end there. The church is right next door which means that couples have the luxury of relaxing and getting ready in the hotel before taking a short stroll to church.

The gardens stretch around the all sides of the house and are home to some fabulous features, including an open air swimming pool! My favourites though are the brilliantly colourful and unusual finds as you wonder around the grounds - bird houses, the grazing sheep and colourful pigs!!

I always look forward to my deliveries to at The Rectory. One of my bookings there this summer is for a lovely bride and groom who live in Sydney, Australia. I can’t wait to see their English country garden themed wedding come together and hopefully I’ll get to meet them too, after emails and phone calls arranging the cake!

Welcome to JellyCake’s new look website!

Hello and welcome to JellyCake’s all new website! We hope you like our stylish new look and have fun navigating around the site.

JellyCake was founded in April 2009 and as the 4^th anniversary approached, we decided to create a new logo and a fresh new look for JellyCake. After a few months of working with our web designers, the site is here and looking fab!

2012 was our busiest year to date with almost 60 wedding cakes baked, iced, decorated and delivered. Although we will still be offering cakes for all celebrations - wedding cakes, cupcakes, favours and dessert tables will be our main focus and is what we are becoming increasingly recognised for.

We have been very lucky to have our wedding cake designs featured in several industry magazines during 2012 and have provided recipes, decorating guides and features for popular baking titles, with more to come in 2013.

At the risk of sounding like an Oscar acceptance speech, I really would like to thank all of my customers, friends, our web designers and all of the amazing new friends I have made within the wedding industry. Lastly of course a huge thank you to my family for their support without whom, well, JellyCake just wouldn’t be here!! Thank you and here’s to a fabulous 2013!

Photo Shoot at Oscar and Rose Photography

I spent the first few weeks of November working on some new cake designs ready for a photo shoot at Oscar and Rose Photography. I wanted some lovely new pictures ready for the launch of the new JellyCake website, so I asked Emma to photograph the cakes for me as I absolutely love her style of photography.

That morning found us on an amazing farm in Lacock, Wiltshire, at Emma’s fabulously converted railway carriage photography studio. It was filled with the most wonderful vintage style props and I was struggling to contain my excitement!

We spent the morning styling and photographing some of my wedding cakes, cupcakes and favours in various fabulous settings. Luckily I’d brought my hubby along to be our runner, and he was a huge help bringing the cakes and props in and out of the car! Emma has a fabulous talent for styling and capturing the perfect shot, there was many a squeal of delight when we saw had a quick look at the pictures on the camera!
